Difference between Personal Statement and Research Statement

A summer research personal statement is a narrative essay about your personal background, passions, and motivations for the program, while a research statement is a more formal document detailing your academic and research interests, qualifications, and future goals. The personal statement focuses on your story and “why,” while the research statement focuses on your qualifications and “what” you will do.

Personal statement

  • Focus: Your personal story, background, motivations, and enthusiasm.
  • Content: Personal experiences, overcoming challenges, and the development of your passions.
  • Tone: More narrative and reflective, telling a compelling story.
  • Purpose: To show your character, passion, and why you are a good fit for the specific program or opportunity.

Research statement

  • Focus: Your specific academic and professional interests, skills, and future goals.
  • Content: Academic and professional history, relevant skills, research interests, and career objectives. It may also include your specific research proposals or how you fit into the program’s research.
  • Tone: More formal, professional, and forward-looking.
  • Purpose: To demonstrate your academic preparedness and potential as a researcher, showing your qualifications and how you can contribute to a program.
