MATRIX Program

Based on our past experiences, we have decided to consolidate our various research training efforts in MMLI into a new program called the MATRIX (MMLI Advancing Talent and Research through Inclusive EXcellence in AI and Chemistry).

We aim to better facilitate our effort to improve diversity, equity and inclusion of the AI-chemistry community for intellectual ecosystem.

Our mission is to support your professional growth at every stage of your career. Register your interest by clicking on the button below.

Offers summer research opportunities designed for undergraduate and college-level students through the Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) at the University of Illinois.

This program is aimed at fostering diversity and inclusion by providing undergraduate students with hands-on research experiences, mentorship, and professional development in the fields of AI and chemistry. Participants join a vibrant academic community from June 2 to July 25, 2025, gaining exposure to cutting-edge research led by the Molecule Maker Lab Institute (MMLI). The program includes workshops, networking events, and opportunities to present research findings, empowering students to explore and prepare for careers in research. Focuses on improving research skills of high school and university/college level students through the MMLI Fellowship program, inspiring the next generation of researchers.

The MMLI Fellowship Program formalizes collaborations by welcoming individuals into our ecosystem to pursue research at the interface of AI and Chemistry. Fellows gain access to MMLI faculty, staff, projects, methods, and tools, enhancing their understanding of AI’s benefits in research and expanding their research pathways. The program includes support such as funding travel to MMLI partner institutions for events like annual retreats or symposiums, fostering deeper engagement with the MMLI community.

MATRIX-GRAD [click to read more]

Provides research training support to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in computer science and chemistry, both from MMLI partner institutions and beyond.

This program is designed for during-semester research training, allowing non-MMLI participants to visit MMLI research groups for a semester to conduct their own research with guidance and mentorship from MMLI PIs.

MATRIX-PI [click to read more]

Engages researchers looking to expand their research portfolio in the AI-chemistry space.

Non-MMLI faculty are invited to collaborate with MMLI PIs by visiting one or more MMLI research groups for a defined period to pursue their own research with mentoring and support from MMLI PIs.

Through these programs, MMLI seeks to foster growth, innovation, and impactful collaborations across all career stages.

Core Goals

Through research trainings, specifically in AI and Chemistry with MMLI at the forefront, we aim to:

Advance talents, unlock potentials of individual student and researcher.
Promote inclusive research excellence
Increase accessibility to our current AI-chemistry research community
